LED inicator light bright red
Hi I have wired up the module to a pi zero, to test a python script, the channel I want to use should be on LOW until the conditions are met, the indicator light is now a brighter red even though i am not running the script any more, When the channel is switched to HIGH, what colour should the LED be? Many thanks Pascale

Switching LED bulbs at mains voltage?
Can I use this device to enable my Pi to switch on and off LED light bulbs running at mains voltage? Ie I want to wire the mains to the input of the relay, and have the output be a light socket (E27 for example). Then I want to use my Pi to switch these bulbs on and off. The relays are rated for 250V/10A, so the voltage is OK and my LED bulbs won't use more than 17W each (less then 0.1A). So it seems fine in principle? But then it also talks about being used with microprocessors, and I just want to wire directly between the mains and the bulbs. Can this work? Thanks.

  • Whilst we do not advice the use of mains power with relays, yes it is possible to switch mains voltages with this relay board.

current limiting resistor
The instructions say "We recommend that you place a current limiting resistor in-line with your input pin and the relay input" Is "your input pin" the 3.3v output pin from a Pi? What size current limiting resistor?

  • The input pin/signal pin is one of the GPIO pins that you are going to use to trigger the relay. A 10k resistor will do the job

Ready to get switching on your Raspberry Pi?! This neat relay module features 8 x 12V relays rated at 10A/250V each. It's designed to switch up to 8 high current (10A) or high voltage (250V) loads from a microcontroller!

Each relay can be individually switched on/off by an opto-isolated digital input, which that can be connected directly to a microcontroller output pin. It only requires a voltage of approx 1.0V to switch the inputs on but can handle input voltages up to 12V. This makes it ideal for 3.3V, 5V & 12V devices.

How to Use

Connect a supply voltage of between 8V and 12V to the VCC and GND pins. This is used to power the relay coils when they are switched on. A power Indicator LED indicates when power is supplied. Ensure that power is applied in the correct polarity (+) to VCC, and (-) to GND. Applying power the wrong way round will damage the board!

The jumper acts as a shorting link which links the signal ground to the power ground. If you want full isolation for your microcontroller from potentially noisy relays, this link can be removed.

Therefore, remover the jumper, and input signals from your microcontroller should be supplied between the COM pin and each input pin. COM should be connected to your microcontroller's GND. The relay input pin (IN1, IN2, IN3 etc.) should be connected to the signal voltage line from your microcontroller. We recommend that you place a current limiting resistor in-line with your input pin and the relay input.

To switch your chosen relay e.g. IN1, will switch relay 1, apply the signal voltage.
