5V terminal block?
Hi! How can I connect 5V to the terminal block, when the Raspberry I2C works with 3V3? With which voltage do the extender IC work and what’s the voltage of the inputs/outputs? Thanks a lot!!

  • Our MCP23017 HAT has a I2C level shifter! This will convert all 5v I2C signals from the chip to 3v3 to pass to the Pi :)


    To power the MCP23017 chips with an external 5v, simply solder the screw terminal in place and hook up your + and - as indicated on the PCB. IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you remove the jumper labelled "PWR JUMPER". If you don't, your external 5v power supply will try and power the Pi.

Is there a Case Available?
Is there a case for the Pi that will take both this and the Pi 3, and maybe allow me to mount some terminal screws on the outside of that connect to the HAT? Ideally I'd like one that would also accommodate an ePaper display HAT on top.

The MCP23017 HAT from ModMyPi is the perfect I/O expansion HAT for your Raspberry Pi! The HAT features two removable MCP23017 DIP IC's, which utilise two i2c pins (which can be shared with other devices if required), and in exchange gives your Raspberry Pi an additional 32 GPIO ports! Each I/O pin can be configured as an input, output or an input with a pullup resistor. The MCP23017 HAT is stackable, featuring selectable i2c address jumpers which supports up to 8 independent addresses: This means you can add up to 128 additional I/O's to a single Raspberry Pi by stacking up to 4 MCP23017 HAT's! 

The MCP23017 HAT can also be used to protect your Raspberry Pi! We've used removable, rather than surface mount, MCP23017 DIP IC's which can act as replaceable buffer for the Raspberry Pi's GPIO, essentially protecting your Raspberry Pi from damage via the GPIO ports. The MCP23017 HAT is powered via the Raspberry Pi's GPIO port, but features an included (but unsoldered) terminal block for advanced users wanting to use an external 5V source, or stack multiple MCP23017 HATS on a single Pi. The isolation jumper "PWR JUMPER" must be removed when using an external source.

The product comes fully assembled with our push-fit "plug & play" Single Shroud HeaderSocket Header, and 14mm HAT Mounting Kit, so there's no soldering required, and you can get started in no time with our Wiki & Example Code!
