Will This device work with a Raspberry Pi Zero W?
Hi I'm thinking of purchasing one of these to build a night vision CCTV camera with a Raspberry Pi Zero W, is it compatible? what Ampage PSU would be required and does the cable fit the pi zero W?
Guy Hodson
  • Yes it is compatible but the Pi Zero and Pi Zero Wireless require a Pi Zero Camera Cable. The cable supplied with the camera does NOT fit the Pi Zero. You will need a decent power supply of a minimum of 2A as the IR leds can be a bit power hungry.

Can the camera be used in daylight?
Erik
  • Yes this can be used in daylight, you may notice some very slight colour distortion though due to the IR filter being removed.

Powered with a 5m micro Cable?
Will this be able to be powered with a 5 meter micro USB cable connected to my pi zero or Rpi 2?
Josh
  • No this plugs into the Raspberry Pi via the dedicated camera port. Power is also supplied this way.

If you are using this with a Pi Zero, you will need a Pi Zero Camera cable

Further info (datasheet) on IR LED
Where can I get further info e.g. manufacturer & part number, datasheet etc for the two IR LEDs?
David
Where is the invoice resistor for IR leds
Where is the resistor for changing IR LED on/off sensitivity
Oliver
  • There is one on each of the the IR LED boards. It's a tiny little silver metal disk with a cross head on it. Its opposite the light sensor (on the same side though) and nearest the IR LED.

Will this work with motionpi?
Will the camera work straight off with motion pi? Will the infra red work with motion pi?
Andrew
  • Yes, this camera will work just fine with MotionPi.

MotionPi won't be able to turn on/off the IR LEDs as the IR is hardware controlled via the onboard light sensors.

does this need a heat sink
we are planing to out this camera on a robot for under floor inspection, was wondering if this camera can work though the USB port on the pi instead of the ribbon cable.
Ravi Sanyal
  • No, this camera is specifically designed to work with the Pi's dedicated camera port.

What does the fox say? You'll probably never know, but at least we can see what that pesky fox is up to with this Raspberry Pi Night Vision Camera!

Our Raspberry Pi Night Vision Camera plugs directly into the CSI connector on the Raspberry Pi, and features two high intensity Infrared LED spotlights for night time recording! The IR LED's are powered directly from the CSI port, and are capable of lighting an area at a distance of up to 8m! In testing, the best images were captured at a distance of 3m to 5m. The camera also features an adjustable 3.6mm focal length lens and 75.7 degree viewing angle.

This Raspberry Pi night vision camera uses the same OV5647 as the standard Raspberry Pi camera, and is therefore able to deliver a crystal clear 5MP resolution image, or 1080p HD video recording at 30fps!

Features

  • Raspberry Pi Night Vision Camera. Compatible with all revisions of the Raspberry Pi
  • 5 Megapixel OV5647 Camera
  • 2 x 3W high-power 850 infrared LEDs:
    • Onboard photoresistor to detect ambient light
    • Onboard adjustable resistor, for controlling the ambient light threshold of toggling the infrared LED
  • Camera specifications
    • CCD size : 1/4inch
    • Aperture (F) : 1.8
    • Focal Length : 3.6MM (adjustable)
    • Diagonal : 75.7 degree
    • Sensor Resolution : 1080p
  • Dimension : 25mm x 24mm
  • 4 screw holes
    • Used for both attachment and 3.3V power supply
    • Supports up to 2 infrared LEDs

Package Contents

  • Raspberry Pi Camera Board × 1
  • Infrared LED Board × 2
  • 15-Pin FFC CSI Cable × 1
  • Mounting Hardware

Warning

The LEDs intensity is limited by the Raspberry Pi power supply, please ensure you have an adequate Raspberry Pi power supply installed. LEDs running at full intensity can get hot, please take care during prolonged use.

Installation

The IR LEDs can be bolted to the body of the camera using the included bolts. This connects the 3.3V supply to the boards and secures them in place. If you need to adjust the ambient light threshold (to change when the infrared LED's toggle), there is a tiny adjustable potentiometer on each LED board, you can turn it to change the threshold. Please ensure any fitting or adjusting is completed prior to plugging the device into the Raspberry Pi and switching it on.

Please follow this guide on how to install the Raspberry Pi Camera for details on how to set the board up!
