Hi, I'm new in electronics and trying to understand why would I need this kit if I'm controlling a motor. can the same objective not be achieved with a transistor? or is there something more this board provides which can't be achieved easily.
This board is far superior than a simple transistor. This board has a 5v regulator circuit to allow powering of your Pi from the same power source used for the motors. It also allows you to rotate the motors in both directions, something that can't be acheived with a single transistor. It also uses PWM to control the speed of your motors, a very power effeicent method of speed control. Has a battery voltage monitoring circuit.
Take a look at the full list of features and specifications. Basically all of them cannot be done with a single transistor :)
